| What should I wear? |
Wear comfortable clothing that allows you to move freely (most studios have a no jeans policy).
Women should avoid slip on shoes or sandals.
|
| Do I need to bring a partner? |
Absolutely not, but be prepared to meet lots of new people. Dance classes in the Lower Mainland traditionally have more ladies than men. If you wish to be guaranteed a partner, you must bring one. Be aware that the instructor cannot dance with only one person during the entire class.
|
| My partner and I just want to dance with each other. Do we have to rotate? |
Because it is good for practicing technique, almost all instructors will switch partners during a social dance class. If you would rather not, then speak to the instructor before the class starts.

| What is the difference between East Coast Swing & West Coast Swing? |
All the variations of the Jive & Swing originated with the Lindy Hop and Charleston. It is from these two dances that the single step (known as Jive) and the triple step (known as Swing) came next. Jive & Swing share many of the same foot placements only Jive is traditionally danced to faster music like the 50's Rock & Roll and Swing is danced to the slower 70 and 80's music. East Coast Swing is danced in a circular movement on the spot and is characterized by a distinct three step rhythm that moves from side to side. West Coast Swing arrived on the scene much later and is characterized by its slow, sexy forward and back movements designed to be danced in a "slot". Although both dances are danced in nightclubs, West Coast Swing was specifically developed for those slow songs where nightclub floor space is crowded.

What is the age range of people at the group lessons and parties?
How good do I have to be to attend the parties? |
The average age of people taking lessons falls between 25-50. All studio parties are designed with the beginner student in mind. Some students may have taken only a few lessons where other students may have been dancing for a few years. In any case, everyone who attends the parties is there to dance! Dance parties provide an opportunity for everyone to "practice" the material they are learning in their lessons and are very important for students who are within their first year of lessons. Instructors are available to review and assist as necessary. It is also an excellent way to socialize with people who enjoy dancing.
|
| Do I really have to have to take the dance lesson before the party or can I just attend the party? |
Actually, you can attend one or both. Our parties are held once a month with a free lesson from 7-8pm. The dance runs from 8-11pm and costs $10/person. The lessons are excellent for students taking lessons within their first year but are also a great time to review if you have not been out dancing in awhile.
|
| I missed the first group lesson. Can I still join in or is it too late? |
No, it's not too late. All the instructors review the material taught in the previous class, especially the first one as everyone is a little nervous.
|
| I'm a klutz. I just wish I could dance at my office parties when they put that rock and roll on. Do you have group lessons for that? |
Jive, Swing and most of the Latin Dances can be danced to the rock and roll they play most often, and yes, our group lessons teach all of those. Attending the practice parties also helps you to recognize which dances may be done to all those favourite songs.
|
| I'm really excited about dancing and would like to learn more. Should I take private or group lessons? |
Taking group or private lessons is a personal choice. Group lessons are $10/hr and private lessons are $50/hr. Many people prefer private lessons because they can book them at a time which is more convenient for them and it provides one-one (or two) instruction. Some people take group lessons and an occasional private, especially if they are having difficulty with a particular step or dance, or if they have a special occasion coming up. (Weddings, Graduations, Boat Cruise)
